Building a better future for our city’s next-generation builders is the mission of CHAD, the Charter High School for Architecture and Design founded by the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. CHAD aims to introduce inner city students to the visual concepts fundamental to the pursuit of architecture as a profession. The school approached DVREDF with a vision to update its facility at 7th and Sansom Streets in Center City. Specific improvements financed by DVREDF include the cafeteria, computer center and student lockers.
The Charter High School for Architecture and Design (CHAD) is a public, independent, college high school, one of 46 charter schools currently established in Philadelphia. It is the first charter high school for architecture and design in the nation. Design is central to CHAD’s curriculum, and is used as an instrument to help students develop creative problem-solving skills, visual and spatial literacy and an understanding of the physical environment and its impact on our quality of life. CHAD features access to new and emerging design technology and exposure to the design professions including the building and construction trades. 600 students from over 50 zip codes across the City are currently enrolled.
